The term "brassiere" seems to have come into use in the English lingo as early as 1893. Manufacturers were using the term by about 1904, Vogue booklet first used it in 1907, and by 1911 the chitchat had plastic its contrivance into the Oxford English Dictionary. On 13 November 1914, the newly formed US patent category for "brassieres" was inaugurated with a patent issued to Mary Phelps Jacob.
